Creating a RIPE NCC Access Account
A RIPE NCC Access account is your personal identity in the RIPE ecosystem. It is required to manage resources, create objects in the RIPE Database, and access all RIPE NCC services, including the LIR Portal and RPKI Dashboard.
Step 1: Go to the Registration Page
- Open https://access.ripe.net/registration
- You will see the "Create an Account" form
Step 2: Fill in the Registration Form
| Field | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Your email address (will be used for login) | noc@example.com | |
| Name | Your full name | John Smith |
| Password | Must meet complexity requirements | — |
Use a shared team email (e.g., noc@, admin@) rather than a personal one if multiple people need to manage network resources. You can always add additional accounts later.
Step 3: Verify Your Email
- Check your inbox for a verification email from RIPE NCC
- Click the verification link in the email
- Your account is now active
Step 4: Enable Two-Factor Authentication (Recommended)
After logging in for the first time, it is strongly recommended to enable 2FA:
- Go to https://access.ripe.net
- Click on your name → "Account Settings"
- Under "Two-Factor Authentication", click "Enable"
- Scan the QR code with an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, etc.)
- Enter the verification code to confirm
Without 2FA, your account is vulnerable to compromise, which could allow unauthorized changes to your routing objects, ROAs, or resource assignments.
Step 5: Link to an Organization (if applicable)
If your organization is already an LIR or has resources in the RIPE Database:
- Go to https://my.ripe.net
- Navigate to "My LIR" → "Users"
- An existing admin can invite your RIPE NCC Access account by email
- Accept the invitation from your inbox
What You Can Do With a RIPE NCC Access Account
- Log in to the RIPE Database web interface to create and manage objects
- Manage RPKI — create and modify ROAs
- Access the LIR Portal — manage IP allocations and assignments (if you are an LIR)
- Use SSO authentication for maintainer objects (recommended over MD5 passwords)
Account vs. Maintainer
It is important to understand the difference:
| RIPE NCC Access Account | Maintainer (mntner) | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Personal identity / login | Authorization for database objects |
| Created at | access.ripe.net | RIPE Database |
| Protects | Access to RIPE NCC services | Database objects from unauthorized changes |
Your Access account authenticates you. A maintainer authorizes changes to objects. You need both — see Creating a Maintainer Object for the next step.
